Spain, August
5, 2008

The
first two weeks of August are typically the hottest in the
year here in Spain. Sometimes you just want to take a
ride in the car, because it has air conditioning. Of
course, when you remember that gas is $7.59 per gallon you
have to think harder about taking that joy ride. You
know that you are desperate when you meander through the
dairy section of the grocery store because the
refrigeration cools your sweaty brow. If you happen
to go out at mid-afternoon you begin to wonder if you live
in a ghost town. The blinds are closed on the
windows, businesses are shut down for lunch and siesta time
and no one else is in the street. However, there are
some things that are worth braving the heat to
experience.

VACATION
BIBLE SCHOOL
Each evening last week, children came to the Avalanche
Ranch Vacation Bible School. We had a great number,
and several who were first time visitors to the Outreach
Center. We had the Center all decorated to go with
the western theme. Then we had the hot desert weather
to boot. Click on this link to see more photos and
information about our VBS.

CHURCHES
Attendance always seems to take a dip during the summer
months. We are really pleased that in general we have
had good attendance this summer. Last week 37 of us
trekked over to the Alpedrete church service. We
sweated on the way there and while we were in the service
too. We had four first-time visitors, one of them
being the newborn daughter of a family in the church.
Pray for our church as there are some tremendous
needs. Pray that God would give us wisdom as we
teach, preach, counsel and comfort this congregation.
We are also excited about the progress being on the new
church building in Villalba. Click on this link to see recent photos of the
progress being made.

THE JOHNSONS RETURN
We're hoping the Johnsons will bring cooler temperatures with them when they come. We really look forward to the return of our teammates on August 13. Our children are also excited about Alejandro and Ana coming home to Alpedrete. Emily has lots of excitement during these hot summer days. She has lost her first two teeth and will be turning SIX years old on August 9th!
THE RED KEEPS CLIMBING
As we watch the mercury rise on the thermometers we see more and more red. Temperatures have been in the mid 90s for a week or so. Today we are supposed to get near 100. Unfortunately, we are seeing more red in another area as well. Our account, like many other missionaries lately, has been struggling. Click on this link to see missionaries whose accounts are in the red. We are thankful and excited about the denomination voting to accept the new way of supporting our missionaries beginning in January of 2010. We are convinced that this will relieve us of the burden and distraction of watching our account dwindle, and will unite our FWB family in supporting their global evangelization efforts. You can read more about the new plan by clicking this link.
